Your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) might not be something you think about every day, but it is quietly building your retirement savings in the background. A quick and regular PF balance check can help you plan better, especially if you are thinking about taking a loan, making a withdrawal, or just want to know how much interest you've earned.
Fortunately, it is not necessary to wait until retirement to access the available amount in your EPF account. In this blog, you will learn how to check EPF balance through 2 convenient methods: with and without Universal Account Number (UAN).
The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme in India for salaried employees in the organised sector. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, administers EPF.
When an employee starts contributing to the EPF, they are assigned a Universal Account Number (UAN), a 12-digit permanent unique number that ensures their contributions are accurately tracked. Both the employer and employee contribute 12% (currently) of the employee’s salary to the EPF account every month. This contribution is deducted automatically from the employee’s monthly salary and deposited into their account. Over time, these savings grow and become a financial resource for the employee during retirement.
If you work for a company that has its own private trust instead of using the government’s EPF system, you won’t be able to check your EPF balance on the EPFO portal. It is because your PF contributions go to the company’s trust, not the EPF. To find out your PF balance, you need to check your salary slips, log in to your company’s employee portal, or raise a request to your HR department.
Even if your EPF is another deduction on your salary slip, it is a classic example of how little drops of water make the mighty ocean. Over time, these regular and disciplined savings will form the foundation of a secure retirement fund. You can easily make an EPF balance check through multiple methods, such as the EPFO portal, UMANG app, SMS service, or a simple missed call. Thus, always consider EPF as a planned debit today for a rewarding credit tomorrow.
You can perform a PF balance check with UAN number through the EPFO portal or the UMANG app.
You can check your EPF balance without UAN SMS (7738299899) and missed call (9966044425)
For an EPF balance check, you need an activated Universal Account Number (UAN). The steps are: Go to the EPFO member portal, select ‘Services' → ‘For Employees’ → ‘Member UAN/Online Services.’ You will be redirected to the UAN member portal. Once there, click on ‘Activate UAN’ under ‘Important Links,’ enter details, validate the OTP, and activate your UAN.
No, you can't check your EPF balance with your Aadhaar number. You'll need your UAN (Universal Account Number) for a PF balance check.
When you do the EPF login with your UAN, you'll see all your linked EPF accounts, including those from previous employers. Simply click on the member ID of your old account to check its balance.
