A CIBIL report is an important document that reflects an individual’s financial creditworthiness. However, if you've ever found an error in your report, you know how adverse its impact can be, potentially lowering the credit score and hindering your ability to access credit.
That’s why we will explore what a CIBIL dispute is, the different types of disputes, and the step-by-step process to raise one to ensure your credit report is accurate and up-to-date. We’ll also walk through how TransUnion CIBIL resolves inaccuracies in your credit report to ensure your financial profile remains accurate and reliable.
A CIBIL dispute is a formal request you can raise with TransUnion CIBIL to correct errors or discrepancies in your credit report. These errors can range from a simple spelling mistake in your name to incorrect information for your loan or credit card account. By raising a dispute, you initiate a process in which CIBIL investigates the inaccuracy with the concerned credit institution (such as a bank or NBFC) to rectify it. You can resolve this issue either by filing a CIBIL complaint online or through the offline process.
CIBIL disputes are mainly of two types, and they are as follows:
An individual dispute can be in the form of incorrect personal details or issues with duplicate accounts. The smallest of errors, for example, mistakenly recording Riya Joshi as Priya Joshi, can lead to a low credit rating. To rectify the issue, you can submit a CIBIL dispute resolution request with accurate documents and resolve the specific discrepancies.
A commercial dispute can be in the form of errors in credit reports, data entry mistakes, or outdated information. These inaccuracies can hinder business partnerships, particularly when based on a company’s creditworthiness. A CIBIL dispute allows you to flag these inaccuracies and request corrections.
You can raise a CIBIL complaint either online or offline as follows:

When you're applying for a personal loan or entering a business partnership that relies on creditworthiness, your CIBIL score is the first information that lenders require to determine your financial credibility.
Even minor mistakes in your account details, payment history, or information related to your credit transactions can work against you and impact your financial worthiness. If you notice any discrepancies, follow the steps outlined on how to raise dispute in CIBIL to address errors and maintain a good credit profile.
A CIBIL dispute generally takes around 30 days to resolve.
In the event of a change or update in the contact details or email ID, the bank will update its records first and then inform TransUnion CIBIL during its monthly data submission cycle. CIBIL then processes this data within a 7-15 day period and updates your credit report accordingly.
Your bank/financial institution will report any recent payments to the TransUnion CIBIL in 30 to 45 days.
If you're not satisfied, you can contact the Credit Institution (CI) directly or raise the dispute again for re-verification.
In your CIBIL report, check the ‘Personal Information’ tab. From there, you can verify whether the name, age, date of birth, and gender are correct and belong to you.
