Receiving a traffic challan notification when your car is parked at home can be both confusing and alarming. In such cases, the culprit is vehicle number plate cloning, a growing scam where fraudsters duplicate your registration number and use it on a different vehicle for illegal activities. As these incidents increase across India, the government has introduced a secure solution: High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs).
Designed to prevent tampering and fraud, HSRPs are now mandatory for all vehicles nationwide and are being implemented in phases by state authorities. In this blog, we will guide you through how to apply for HSRP number plate online quickly and easily.
The HSRP full form, ‘High Security Registration Plate’, is a government-mandated, tamper-proof vehicle number plate to prevent counterfeiting and illegal practices of vehicles across India. It is an aluminium plate with a laser-etched unique identification number, a chromium hologram of Ashok Chakra, and the vehicle’s registration number. It is secured to the vehicle using non-removable snap locks and also includes a color-coded fuel sticker to indicate the type of fuel used.
Prevention of vehicle theft: HSRP plates are designed to be tamper-proof and difficult to replicate, acting as a strong deterrent against vehicle theft and unauthorised cloning.
Verification of vehicle authenticity: With embedded holograms and unique identification numbers, these plates enable rapid confirmation of vehicle ownership and registration, thereby reducing the risk of fraud.
Improved road safety: The standardised and secure nature of HSRPs makes it easier for police to identify vehicles involved in traffic violations or criminal activity.
Easy vehicle tracking: Laser-etched codes on HSRP plates seamlessly integrate with surveillance systems, such as ANPR cameras, to enhance vehicle traceability and facilitate effective traffic management.
Standardised format nationwide: By following a consistent format nationwide, HSRPs eliminate regional discrepancies, simplifying inter-state checks and enhancing regulatory efficiency.
High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) are legally required for all vehicles in India, as mandated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Vehicles purchased before April 2019 must be upgraded with an HSRP, while those bought after are already equipped with them by default.
An HSRP number plate is a mandatory and effective safeguard against vehicle-related crimes like theft and number plate cloning. Equipped with tamper-proof features and unique identification codes, they help ensure ownership authenticity and support better traffic enforcement.
The online process for an HSRP number plate booking is simple and only takes a few minutes through authorised websites. If your vehicle was registered before April 2019, it’s essential to upgrade to an HSRP. Installing the HSRP will ensure you comply with the law and avoid unnecessary penalties.
You will require a copy of your Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) and a government ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Driving License, etc.). Some states may also require address proof or insurance details.
HSRP number plate for old vehicle is mandatory as per government rules, and it includes all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Vehicles registered after this date usually come with HSRP by default.
You can request a duplicate HSRP plate on the ‘Book my HSRP’ website if it is lost or damaged.
You need to provide both the engine number and chassis number when filling out the HSRP application online.
For tracking your HSRP, you need your vehicle registration number and the order number received at the time of booking.
