India’s move towards a digital-first economy has made the Aadhaar card a necessity for every Indian. The 12-digit unique identification number serves as proof of identity and is the backbone of numerous services, including banking, income tax filing, government subsidies, and UPI transactions.
However, access to these services depends on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. An outdated or inactive number can lead to failed verification, missed OTPs, and restricted access to essential services. In this blog, we will guide you through the Aadhaar mobile number update process to ensure uninterrupted access to banking, government, and digital platforms.
A mobile number linked to Aadhaar is more than just a contact detail. It functions as a core channel for OTP-based verification while accessing services, including:
An outdated, wrong, or inactive number disrupts these services. For example, income tax e-filing requires OTP confirmation on the Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Similarly, UPI activation through Aadhaar-based verification becomes impossible without the correct number. Hence, every Aadhaar card holder must ensure their active number is updated correctly.
Visit the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) website or use the mAadhaar app to find the nearest authorised centre. Centres are typically available in banks, post offices, and UIDAI-run Seva Kendras.
At the centre, request the Aadhaar update/correction form. Fill in your personal details, including name, Aadhaar card number, and the new mobile number. Accuracy is important, as this form becomes the basis for all subsequent processing.
Submit the filled form to the Aadhaar operator along with biometric authentication (fingerprint/iris scan). This ensures that only the Aadhaar holder can authorise the mobile number change.
A nominal fee is charged for updating the Aadhaar mobile number. The operator issues an acknowledgement slip containing an Update Request Number (URN).
Use the URN on the UIDAI portal to track the progress of the update request. It usually takes up to 30 days for the new number to be activated.
Go to the official UIDAI portal and select your preferred language.
Click on ‘My Aadhaar’ → ‘Get Aadhaar’ → ‘Book an Appointment.’
Enter your city or location details and click on ‘Proceed to Book Appointment.’
Under the ‘Aadhaar’ tab, enter your mobile number and the captcha code.
Click on ‘Generate OTP’, enter the OTP sent to your mobile number, and verify it.
Select your resident type and fill in the required details, including Aadhaar Number, Name, Date of Birth, Application Verification Type, State, City, and Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
Choose ‘Mobile Number’ from the list of fields that can be updated.
Enter the new mobile number along with the Captcha code. Next, enter the OTP sent to your mobile number, and complete the verification.
Click on ‘Next’, pick the date and time of your visit, review the details, and click on ‘Submit.’
Pay the necessary fee to get an acknowledgement slip containing the Update Request Number (URN).
Reach the centre at the scheduled time, complete the biometric verification, and request the update.
An Aadhaar mobile number change process is a small yet critical step in ensuring uninterrupted access to banking, government, and digital services. The process is straightforward: visit the nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra, submit the correction form, authenticate biometrics, and pay a nominal fee. Once updated, verify your Aadhaar-linked active mobile number through the UIDAI portal or your banking application to confirm activation. This way, you can ensure seamless access to essential services without worrying about failed verifications or missed OTPs.
You can update your Aadhaar mobile number by visiting the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrollment centre. Fill in the update form, complete biometric verification, pay the necessary fee, and collect the acknowledgement slip with a URN to track the request.
The mobile number update itself cannot be completed entirely online, as biometric authentication is required. However, you can book an appointment online through the UIDAI portal and later visit the Aadhaar Seva Kendra to finish the update process.
To check Aadhaar mobile number, go to the UIDAI website and use the ‘Verify Email/Mobile Number’ option under ‘My Aadhaar’ → ‘Aadhaar Services’. Enter your Aadhaar details, and an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number for successful verification.
The Aadhaar mobile number change process usually takes up to 30 days.
